FTL shipping
BC’s leading trucking and warehousing company dives into the benefits of Full Truckload shipping with tips that will help you plan and exceed your 2023 business goals.
Having a solid shipping plan in place is your best bet in keeping your business’ bottom line safe and secure from any logistical nightmares, but choosing the right kind of shipping method is also equally as important. You may be considering whether to ship less-than-truckload (LTL) or full truckload (FTL) depending on the season your business is in. If you’re planning to ship full truckload, we’ve got some great tips below and we’ll also dive into when and why you may want to select this shipping method.
Tip # 1 – Save Up and Consolidate Your Cargo
Unlike less-than-truckload (LTL) where you are sharing the truck space with other shippers, you will have access to the entire truck when shipping full truckload. Your upfront cost will be more than shipping LTL but you’ll definitely see savings if you pool together your cargo and ship it in one go. Shipping higher volumes will save you money in the long run through lower per-unit costs and not needing to break up a shipment into multiple trips. Plan accordingly, bulk up, and save!
Tip #2 – Timing of Quotes
You’ll most likely benefit from a more favourable quote if you have more wiggle room in your schedule and provide your trucking company with more advance notice. Restrictive pick-up and delivery schedules, including weekends and odd hours, require more accommodation and typically result in higher rates.
Tip #3 – Expect delays
Shipping FTL definitely has many advantages when compared to LTL shipping. On top of the reduction in the number of times your cargo is handled, getting your shipment from A to B directly without the extra additional stops means that your goods will arrive much faster. However, despite thorough planning, weather delays and traffic congestion may still throw you a curve ball. Always give yourself a time buffer if your shipment is time-critical.
Tip #4 – Accurate Information
Having accurate, detailed, and complete information is key to moving your goods safely, quickly, and efficiently to their final destination. This includes having all forms filled out with the correct information. Providing details upfront will reduce the need to go back and forth and this in turn helps to reduce any unnecessary costs. Tip #5 – Have the Right Partners Working For You
Your company is only as strong as the team working for you and this includes your logistics partners. From trucking companies and customs brokers to freight forwarders, you’ll not only be relying on their services, but the expertise in their field to help you prevent problems before they arise. Finding a one-stop shop that includes container trucking and warehousing would also be your best bet in reducing handling and time!
