Logistic challenges faced by Canadian Businesses and how Sandhar Trucking can help!

Conquer logistics challenges faced by Canadian businesses with tips from Vancouver’s leader in trucking and warehousing!

Getting your goods from A to B takes a certain finesse from reliable and experienced experts when it comes to shipping and importing goods. Managing the seeming lack of control when your goods board a ship or truck may have some business owners losing sleep at night, but understanding the different components at play and having industry leaders working for you helps you avoid logistic nightmares.

Choosing the shipping model that works for you

The risks and responsibilities that a shipper or receiver is subject to can vary depending on the terms agreed upon before the goods are shipped. These terms are called International Commercial Terms, or Incoterms and they are pre-defined commercial terms that clearly mark out the transport components and the share of costs and risks that both parties bear when making international commercial transactions.

These include:

  • EXW (Ex Works): The buyer assumes full responsibility for transporting the goods
  • FCA (Free Carrier): The seller is responsible for providing cargo that has been cleared for export (duties paid) at a certain delivery point.
  • FAS (Free Alongside Ship): The seller provides ready to be loaded cargo at the dock
  • FOB (Free On Board): The seller transports and loads cargo on board a vessel that is typically chosen by the buyer.
  • CFR (Cost and Freight): The seller is responsible for bringing and unloading the cargo at the port of destination, but the buyer assumes the risk at the port of origin as soon as the cargo is loaded.
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight): Similar to CFR with the added portion of insurance for the cargo up to the port of destination.
  • CIP (Carriage and Insurance Paid): The seller assumes complete responsibility for transporting the cargo to the point of destination and providing insurance. The buyer’s responsibility only pertains to unloading the cargo at the point of destination.

Choosing the Best Mode of Transport

Cargo can be transported via a combination of ocean, air, rail, or truck. An experienced freight forwarding company will help you select the best modes of transportation to fit your needs. For example, shipping by rail and truck will help decrease costs if there is more leeway in terms of time.

By having authorized access to all major ports and rails in Metro Vancouver, our team at Sandhar Trucking works closely with leading freight forwarders to make sure your cargo is transported safely and efficiently to its destination.

Package and Label Correctly

Selecting the right packaging not only means your goods will be kept safe at all times, but it’s also directly related to whether your goods can enter a country. Wooden pallets are not welcomed in certain countries unless they are fumigated and certified.

Labelling shipments correctly is extremely important as failure to do so will result in delays and unnecessary costs.

Protocols are constantly changing and having experienced experts that stay up to date with the latest information is key.

Being ready for Customs Clearance

Whether your shipment is selected for a rigorous customs examination or waiting to be cleared at a sufferance warehouse, knowing what to expect helps you understand the cost and procedures associated with this process.

Understanding the Global Landscape

Keeping up to date with the latest changes in the global market affects the bottom line of any business. Currency, border treaties, and shipping trends are continually evolving and experienced providers will ensure that you are in complete compliance with customs regulations while fully utilizing trade programs that are available.
