What are bonded sufferance warehouses?
Bonded sufferance warehouses are privately owned storage facilities licensed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to help with the storage, delivery, transfer, and examination of in-bond goods (import or export) until the goods are examined by CBSA or exported from Canada.
Sufferance warehouses offer short-term storage solutions for your shipment. While in storage, you are able to defer paying customs duty, excise taxes, and anti-dumping duty as the goods have not been cleared for release into the Canadian market. However, for goods to be eligible for storage in a sufferance warehouse, a financial security bond must be posted first.
There are certain restrictions while your shipment is stored and waiting to be cleared. Without the CBSA officer’s approval, goods are only accessible to the warehouse license owner and the authorized employees of the warehouse or the carrier.
Time limits for storage
Since sufferance warehouses are intended for short-term storage, usually goods can only be stored for up to 40 days. However, the nature of the items also dictates how long the goods can be kept there.
- Perishable goods with limited expiration dates have a limit of 4 days
- Spirits and alcohol have a limit of 21 days
- Prescribed substance has a limit of 14 days
- Tobacco, firearms, and weapons have a limit of 14 days
- All other goods usually have a maximum limit of 40 days
In the event that your goods do not exit the sufferance warehouse in time, they will either be forfeited and disposed of.
Why are sufferance warehouses important and how does the process work?
Sufferance warehouses allow your shipment to be temporarily stored when an immediate clearance by CBSA at the border is not possible. At Sandhar Trucking, our full-service approach allows our client’s shipments to transition seamlessly through the entire process of freight pick up, storage, examination, and transportation.
CBSA Examinations
Our sufferance warehouse in Delta, BC is authorized to conduct CBSA examinations. We are able to pick up in-bond freights and transport them to our warehouse for examination when CBSA selects a shipment for intact exams. We then work closely with CBSA officers to facilitate the clearing process. Once goods are released through our EDI systems, we are able to transload the goods to their next destination or continue to store them at our warehouse.
